Best bullet journal supplies
After getting swarmed with cute doodles and beautiful calligraphy on my Pinterest feed for the past couple months, I knew I wanted to get into the world of Bullet Journaling!
Ah, Bullet Journaling. It’s a land of color, creativity, and costs.
Here’s the thing about bullet journaling. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the sparkly glitter and sweeping brush pens, however, it adds up so fast!
Keeping that in mind, it’s important to figure out what stationery items are best for beginner bullet journalers or bullet journal enthusiasts in general.
First of all:
WHAT IS BULLET JOURNALING?
If you’re not familiar with Bullet Journaling, it’s all about expressing your ideas and planning in a creative way. It’s different from a traditional planner in the sense that you can completely customize the layout and design based on your needs.
That being said, it should be fun!
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR BULLET JOURNALING?
To be honest, all you really need for bullet journaling (or planning) is a regular ole notebook and pen. Nothing too fancy.
Except we here at SuchASweetheart like to be extra. So without further ado, here are my favorite beginner bullet journal stationery items!

BEST BULLET JOURNAL SUPPLIES
Notebook
// Notebook //
A good quality notebook is the foundation in which your bullet journaling experience will be built on. With that said, this is the place where you should spend your money.
Not only will a high-quality notebook last longer, but it will also improve the look of your spreads and layouts.
When purchasing a bullet journal, it’s important to look for things such as:
- Thicker paper
- A sturdy binder
- Numbered pages
- Dotted girds

I originally used a regular notebook I had lying around, however, I soon realized that the quality just wouldn’t stand daily use.
I bought this bullet journal and so far it has been great! I love the dotted guide and the fact that there is absolutely NO ghosting (a pet peeve of mine!)
I have also heard some amazing things about the Leuchtturm notebook.
You can find it here.
Crayola SuperTips
// Crayola Supertip Markers //
One of the first bullet journal supplies I bought were these ultra cheap Crayola Supertip Markers and I couldn’t be happier! They are a beginner bullet journalers dream!
You can use them to create beautiful handlettering or coloring in your spreads/doodles.
I personally love the variety of colors and shades you get. It makes mixing up your designs easy. Especially at this price, you can’t beat these markers!
Black Pen
This one is pretty self-explanatory. A regular ol’ run of the mill black pen will do. However, if you’re wanting a really good quality pen at a stellar price, you gotta check these Sakura pens out.
These are a SUPER popular favorite among bullet journalers alike, and the reviews definitely speak for themselves.
In addition to being awesome pens, they clock in at such a reasonable price! A staple in your collection for sure!

Circle Template
This circular template is BOMB for keeping everything nice and consistent. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to draw a perfectly round circle only to be frustrated with shaky edges or weird ovals.
This is a phenomenal addition to your personal bullet journal because of all the different sized circles you can choose from.
Maybe it’s just the perfectionist in me, but I can’t make consistent layouts without this.
This is such a fantastic item to add to your stash of bullet journal must-haves!

Gel Pens
These are more of an “extra”, but I just ADORE the sparkly touch that these gel pens add to my spreads!
I bought a huge array of colors for an unbelievable price. They glide like a dream and don’t leave any smudging when flipping the page.
In my opinion, these are worth adding to your beginner collection.

Highlighters
Last but not least highlighters! These Zebra Highlighters are very budget friendly for beginners dabbling in bullet journaling.
The cheery colors kick your doodles up to the next level of cuteness! You gotta get ’em.

There are tons of articles out there trying to sell you on high-end materials that you absolutely *need* for bullet journaling when in reality, you could technically just begin with the absolute basics: a notebook and pen.
These inexpensive/cheap bullet journal materials will most definitely lure you into the dark… err colorful… side of journaling!
I hope you enjoy your new collection of stationery items! Leave a comment telling me what your favorite bullet journal supplies are!
